Some information about Teak

What is Teak (Sagwan):

Teak ( Tectona grandis) is a tropical tree species in family Lamiaceae. Teak is also known as Sagwan in Pakistan and India. It is cultivated on large scale in Burma, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Vietnam, African and Caribbean.

Difference between Hybrid teak (sagwan) and desi or seed grown.

1) Seed grown sagwan or teak takes much more time to become a full mature tree that is ready to sale. according to an estimate seed grown or desi teak may take 10 to 25 years to become a full mature tree. But if the plant is planted in Warm as well as humid area then it can grow faster and get ready early.

2) Hybrid teak or sagwan grow faster than desi or seed grown. Hybrid plants grow straight and equally. It takes 8 to 10 years to become a full mature tree that is ready to sale . It should be planted in sandy loam soil (i.e mera zameen) and a costal or Tropical area climate that humid and hot.

There are many hybrid varieties available in the world but the most expensive  and most popular variety is “Golden or Red Burma Teak”. Teak wood of Burma(Myanmar) is most expensive wood. also the benefit of hybrid sagwan is that it will ready for sale in almost one decade only.

Which areas are suitable for teak farming?

Karachi, Nawabshah, Khairpur,  Thatta, Badin, Mehrabpur, Rasoolpur, Haydarabad, Mir pur Khas, Sehwan, Dadu, Garahi, Mehrabpur, Khuzdar,  Khairpur , Ormara, Pasni, Turbat Gawadar, Punjgur, Jiwani, Liari, Bela,Kotri, Kaloi and many other areas near to these cities and Sea. All partes of Sindh and coastal Baluchistan are best for teak farming. Teak can also be planted in lower Punjab and intermediate where the temperature is high and do not go down from 2 degree centigrade in winter.  but in these areas teak growth will slower as compared to coastal areas.

In subtropical (Punjab) area if Teak is planted on the bank of a river or canal or on the bank of a lake then it is same like it is planted in tropical area like Karachi. Simple is that growth of sagwan is very faster if planted near canals , rivers or lakes or near Sea.

Different types of teakwood

1 Burma Teak wood

Burma teak wood is a tree that is native to forests of Burma (Myanmar) . It is the best quality teak wood in the world that is available today.
It has a golden color, elegantly distributed grains, and a high
amount of teak natural oils. It is the most durable type of teak
wood among all.
2 Indonesian Teak Wood

It is also called Asian teak wood. Like Burma teak wood, it is
also real teak wood, native to Indonesia. The growth time of his
type of teak wood is about 30 years. It is one of the best
plantation teak wood all around the world because of soil and
weather suitability. The quality of Indonesian teak wood is
secondary to Burma teak wood. It has wider grains, a
significant quantity of teak natural oils, and sound knots.
It is light brown in color with a slightly grayish hue.
3 African Plantation Teak Wood
African plantation teak wood refers to the teak planted in Africa.
Its growth time is 15 to 25 years, as a result of which it is low in
teak natural oils. Thus, African plantation teak wood is not as
durable as Burma teak wood or Indonesian teak wood.
It is very light brown in color. The wood grains are distributed
widely apart. It has a lot of sound knots.
4 South American Plantation Teak Wood
South American plantation teak wood refers to teak wood
planted in South America. It is similar to African teak wood in
quality, color, teak natural oil content, and arrangement of
wood grains. It is difficult to distinguish between these two
types of teak wood.
5 Indian Teak Wood
Indian teak wood is also popular types of teak wood. It is native
to old-growth forests in India. Because of the high demand of
this teak wood in India, there is almost no supply of Indian

6 Thailand Teak Wood
Thailand teak wood is superior in quality to Burma teak wood.
You read that right! Thailand teak wood is the highest quality
teak wood in the world because the growth conditions for teak
in Thailand are exceptional. However, Thailand teak wood was
over exploited in Thailand as a result of which it has been
declared an endangered species and its logging has been
prohibited by the government. Simple is that teak (plants and timber) export is ban in Thailand. Hence, there is no supply of
Thailand teak wood in the international market.

teak wood. It is a Brazilian hardwood native to South America.

natural oils which make it water resistant and resistant to
worms and pests. The arrangement of grains is very different
from that of real teak wood. The color of Brazilian teak wood
is not golden-brown but is reddish-brown.
8 African Teak Wood
African teak wood is not real teak wood. Its actual name is
iroko. African teak wood is very stable, durable, and water
resistant. It looks nothing like real teak wood. The grains are
arranged in a straight pattern and it has no knots. It has good
resistance to rotting and damage. It is often used as a substitute
to teak wood for outdoor furniture and wood constructions.
9 South American Teak Wood
